Don’t Skimp on the Right Tools

I’ve once again proven to myself that it takes money to make money. But I’m not referring to the funds required to start or grow a business. Instead, I’m talking about the money that you invest in yourself…on equipment. What do I mean?

My regular work schedule is: 9am - 8pm at my desktop in the office, and then head home and work from my laptop in bed (at night, in bed, with my laptop is when I’m actually most productive/efficient). For whatever reason, at about 8/9pm at night, my body just shuts down and refuses to keep working at a desktop. Unfortunately, my laptop broke.

At around the same time that it broke, I was looking for ways to save money, so I didn’t buy a new laptop. Then, 8:30pm would come around, I’d stop my work at the desktop, and my work-day would just end. My girlfriend was ecstatic. I was unproductive. I noticed my late-night productivity quickly take a dive (I work best at night).

So about a month and a half after I lost my laptop I finally replaced it - and I’m more productive than ever.

Now I know that I sound like a laptop-needing brat, but everyone works differently under and works best under different circumstances. Over a month ago, I should have come to terms with the fact that I work best at night, in bed…with a laptop. And I should have just gotten one then.

While I’ve been using my laptop as an example, keep in mind that I could have been referring to any tool that makes you more productive. So in the future, when you find something that you think significantly increase your efficiency, and are hesitant to buy it because of cost - just go for it. Isn’t your time and effort worth a lot more than money?
